A simple enclosure for a fantastic mudroom

Mudrooms are popular additions to many homes in Ontario. They provide a barrier from the cold (or heat) by separating the outside from direct contact with the entry door.

A mudroom can also provide extra storage, which is a great feature during cold winter days. Snowsuits, coats, and boots can take up a lot of room in an entryway. A mudroom keeps these items handy but out of the way.

Of course, the word “mudroom” means it’s a room for mud. This comes from back in the days when folks would come in from the fields (or the construction site, depending on where you lived), and kick off their muddy boots before entering the home. It’s still a great solution for this problem, but it can be so much more.

By using the technology we apply to our sunrooms, our porch enclosures provide a quick and affordable option to create a mudroom on the front or rear entry of your home. It maintains the footprint of the home on the property without being a full addition. And, depending on the size of your porch, can also act as a three-season sunroom seating area. Super Simple Patio Covers

One of our most popular requests from the Lifestyle Sunroom line is our insulated patio cover.

These super simple and affordable solutions provide shade in the winter while also keeping the snow off your driveway, walkway, patio or deck during the winter. Plus, whether enclosed or open, the insulated roof helps keep your patio or deck even cooler in the hot sun.

Unlike an acrylic or plastic patio cover, our patented insulated roofing system is engineered for our tough Canadian climate, and is available with a maintenance-free aluminum top or wood top for shingle application. The true advantage of our insulated patio and deck cover is that on a hot summer day, you will be up to ten degrees cooler due to the insulation value of our roof.

How long does a sunroom installation take?

Because a sunroom is a fairly significant construction project, it can take a matter of weeks from design to installation. This is because there needs to be significant preparation to get started, in order to have a safe and structurally sound construction.

Aside from the fact that it can take several weeks to process a permit (depending on the municipality and the regulations involved), here are some of the general timelines you can expect for a Lifestyle sunroom installation:

Oasis: about one week

Oasis Plus: about two weeks

Grand Oasis: up to four weeks.

These timelines are actually fairly short compared to the industry average. Our government-approved footing technology doesn’t require the extended drying and curing time of standard concrete footings. Our walls and roofing systems are custom built in our Peterborough facility, and in some cases assemble almost like a modular system. And our installers are highly experienced professionals who know our building procedures inside and out.

We also know how disruptive a major renovation or installation can be. That’s why we make every effort to get your installation in as quickly as possible and get you cozy in your new sunroom!

Rooftop Oasis?

Grand Oasis, to be precise! This Ontario sunroom was installed on top of the client’s garage, taking full advantage of the existing rooftop deck structure.

With the structure already in place to support a deck, there was no need to worry about the flat garage roof handling the weight of the sunroom (or the people in it!). The result? A fantastic new outdoor room with spectacular views on all sides that can be enjoyed year-round! Just have a look:

How much does a sunroom cost?

Calculating a sunroom cost isn’t as simple as putting a menu online. This can make researching the cost of a sunroom a little bit more difficult for the homeowner. However, finding out how much a sunroom costs isn’t difficult at all.

Before we get to the solution, let’s look at some of the factors involved in calculating the costs:

Kit vs. Custom

Sunroom kits are available at some major retailers. While these can be more affordable than a custom sunroom, there are often hidden costs to this option.

For example, if you’re not particularly handy, it can be a stressful experience installing a kit. You need to be very familiar with construction techniques like footings, electrical, and structural. You also need to have all the tools necessary to assemble a kit. And before you even get to the assembly you need to file all the appropriate paperwork and get your permits approved by the municipality, all of which carry additional fees.

Beyond that, there is the repair and maintenance of your kit if something goes wrong or isn’t installed properly. And, of course, a kit isn’t customized to your home, so while in the best case it might function properly, it will never really look like it’s meant to be a part of your home.

A custom installation is designed specifically for your home, installed by a qualified builder, takes as little as a couple of weeks, is fully covered by all necessary permits, and can be made to include any electrical or heating work. Plus — in our case at least — it’s fully covered by warranty against improper installation or defects needing repair.

Size and Function

The size and function of your sunroom will affect its cost as well, even in a custom model.

If you want something small, like a mudroom or a porch enclosure, of course the costs will be much lower than they would be for a true addition. With smaller square footage, minimal thermal breaks (insulation), and simple electrical (if needed), the smaller room obviously uses less material and takes less time to prepare and install.

With an addition, the costs necessarily increase. More high-efficiency glass, high-end door options, full electrical work, and optional electric baseboard or gas fireplace heating increase both the material costs and the labour costs. The result will be more living area in your home, but the tradeoff is in the price.

Model

At Lifestyle, we have several models of sunrooms available, from the relatively simple but affordable Oasis, to the four-season Oasis Plus, to the ultimate addition package of the Grand Oasis. Each model has its own unique features, and after installation our customers often say they can’t believe they didn’t get a sunroom sooner!

Of course, the cost increases with each model. This is based on the features of each, the size, and the range of extra features requested by the customer. For example, the Oasis (as well as our even simpler enclosures) is a three-season room, great for enjoying during the spring, summer, and fall. It also makes a great exterior break or mudroom during the winter months. However, it’s essentially an outside room, not usually part of the interior living space. As such, it doesn’t need as much insulation, electrical work, or heating.

The Oasis Plus and Grand Oasis, by contrast, are four-season rooms that can be enjoyed year-round, with the Grand Oasis really acting as a full extension of your indoor living space. These rooms vary in size from the modest to the palatial, and of course this affects pricing as well. To give you a sense of the overall price range, we suggest the following very general price points:

Oasis: $15,000 – $25,000

Oasis Plus: $20,000 – $35,000

Grand Oasis: $35,000 – $70,000

Remember, these prices include permits and applications, as well as our guarantee of quality, custom work! Plus, our simple payment plans could work out to as little as $150-$200 per month (depending on options), making your new sunroom much more affordable than you might expect.
